What are Adaptogens?
Adaptogens are a special classification
of herbs which include Jiaogulan, Garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng
and many others. They have a long history of use and are designated
adaptogen only if they do no harm and
work only when the body requires.

What makes an Herb Adaptogenic?
Adaptogenic is a term used to reflect
the ability of a herb to work as a biological response modifier.
Moreover, for a herb to be adaptogenic
it must meet three criteria defined by the Russian doctors N.V.
Lazarev in 1947 and I.I. Brekman in 1958:
- The herb should cause no harm and
place no additional stress on the body.
- The herb should help the body adapt
to many and varied environmental and psychological stresses.
- The herb must have a nonspecific action
on the body, supporting all the major systems, such as
the nervous system, hormonal system, and immune system, as well
as regulating functions (such as the blood sugar); if they are
too high, an adaptogen will lower it and vice verse.

How common are Adaptogenic properties in plants?
Unlike allopathic drugs which carry with them the possibility of
side effects, adaptogens must benefit
the body without disturbing it or doing it harm. Not many plants
possess adaptogenic properties. In fact
it is estimated that only one in 4,000 plants is classified as an
adaptogen.

How do Jiaogulan's Adaptogenic effects help the body?
Jiaogulan is one of the more powerful adaptogenic
herbs known. Jiaogulan's adaptogenic
effect benefits the body in two ways.
- Jiaogulan directly nourishes the internal
organs by increasing the blood supply through enhanced
cardiac output.
- Jiaogulan normalizes the nervous and hormonal
systems in the body when they are adversely affected by
stress.
Jiaogulan is Unique
Aside from jiaogulan, there are other adaptogenic
herbs. Although adaptogens generally
function in the same way, and have a great many health-giving properties,
they are not all the same. What makes jiaogulan unique is the wide
variety of therapeutic effects that scientists have demonstrated
through their research.
A Partial List of Jiaogulan's Therapeutic Benefits
- Anti-oxidant protection
- Enhancing cardiovascular function
- Blood pressure regulations
- Cholesterol regulation
- Positive influence on blood elements
- Strengthening immunity, etc.
In other words, getting these benefits by taking jiaogulan could
eliminate the need for using an array of other supplements.

Some
of the above information was collected from Jiaogulan,
The Chinese Immortality Herb. Michael Blumert and Dr.
Jioliu Liu have assembled the best source of information concerning
the research of Jiaogulan and its components.
